The Art of Pottery

The Art of Pottery

For thousands of years, artisans have been producing pottery to store goods and foods. In fact, history has shown that the invention of pottery precedes the written word. Today, pottery comes in all shapes and sizes and can be produced from an array of materials, but how did this stunning art form begin?

Here at Alyssa Bazaar, we know not only how functional pottery can be but also how beautiful. That is why we thought we would take a closer look at this stunning artform and the benefits it provides.

A brief history of pottery

With the earliest pottery fragments known to man dating back 20,000 years and historians believing these products date much earlier than that, the early beginnings of pottery are shrouded in mystery. However, one common theory is that it was discovered by accident.

Early humans would transport water in woven baskets, with this liquid often having some natural clay and mud in it. As this dried, it would take on the shape of the basket, giving these early settlers a sturdy vessel that could transport more water.

From those early days, the use of pottery became more widespread, and the invention of the kiln by the ancient Egyptians helped take pottery to the next level. This allowed for more artistic designs on pots, allowing artisans to depict images of gods and mythological heroes.

The next step in pottery came during the medieval period when artisans realized that adding sand into the clay helped to create a material that was able to withstand heat from a fire. This eventually led to the creation of stoneware and then porcelain, with each new invention creating a stronger and more aesthetically pleasing product.

What are the benefits of pottery?

Despite being thousands of years old, pottery is still providing benefits to homeowners today. Adding these beautiful kitchenware items to your home can provide you with a range of benefits, including:
